Here's how our unique career pathways work:

Not yet Licensed:

The Externship (Optional, during school):

Technical Experience:

• Cosmetology Externs

• Commitment: 6-12 hours (unpaid, as this phase is part of your educational experience)

• Objectives: Introduction to salon life in the real world, introduction to Left Coast Salon Culture.

Licensed:​

The Career Map

The Assistant Salon Residency (ASR): The First 4-6 Weeks

• Commitment: ±10 hours per week over 2-3 days

• Compensation: $17/hour

Objectives:

• Onboarding:

  • Assess fit for the organization, community, and learner.

  • Increase awareness of industry and local economic forces.

  • Manage industry pathway expectations.

  • Check overall industry suitability.

• Training:

  • Host responsibilities

  • Assistant responsibilities

  • Salon operations

  • The Basic Wash and Style

  • ​

When suitability, compatibility, and passion align, the ASR is invited to become a Level 1 Stylist and continue their training.

Salon Residency Program: Levels 1-3

• Duration: 1-2 years

• Commitment: 12-40 hours per week

• Compensation: $18-19/hour plus tiered commission scale + cash gifts

• Perks: Unlimited time off, flexible scheduling, PTO

• ​

Objective: Deepen technical skills, client service, and become fully versed in the Wholehearted approach to hairdressing.

• Technical:

  • The Wash: Basics of hair and scalp care.

  • The Style: Basics of hair manipulation using products, heat, and techniques to achieve various looks on all hair textures and curl patterns.

  • The Ideal Haircut Experience

    • Long, Medium, Short, and Barbering

  • Color Considerations

    • Color Consultations

  • Special Occasion Styling

Certification and Opportunities for Growth:
Completion of the Salon Residency Program at Level 3 leads to certification and graduation from the program and opportunities for further career development within Left Coast Salon as a Level 4 stylist and beyond.
